Footloose director Craig Brewer finds a star in Julianne Hough

SheKnows sits down with writer/director Craig Brewer to hear about how he cast Julianne Hough as the star of his dance movie Footloose.

"I was given permission to not use her," says director and co-writer of the new FootlooseCraig Brewer of his choice to cast Julianne Hough in the dance movie remake.

Julianne Hough

Hough, a two-time Dancing with the Stars winner, plays Ariel, the wild child country girl who falls for the city kid -- played by Kenny Wormald -- in the film about a Southern town where dancing is illegal.

At first, Brewer wasn't sure if Hough was the right choice for the part. This would be the first major acting role for the dancer-turned-actress and her performance would have to carry a large part of the film.

"But then she called me up and said, 'We've got to meet. We both live in Tennessee,'" says Brewer. So he drove from Memphis to Nashville to meet with Hough. And she auditioned for the part -- on the spot.

Brewer says he knew instantly she was perfect for the part. "I remember leaving thinking... Julianne Hough, this girl is gonna be a star."

Julianne Hough shook her caboose to Footloose on Dancing with the Stars >>

The actress has studied performance arts all her life and comes from a family of professional dancers. Her grandparents on both sides, her parents and several of her siblings are professional dancers. With the weight of the film on her shoulders, she jumped in full-force.

SheKnows sat down with the writer/director to hear about casting Hough, keeping the energy alive on set and why Footloose is the dance movie everyone's talking about.

Celebrity Interviews: Footloose’s Hough and Wormald

Footloose co-stars Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald sit down with SheKnows to talk about his dance solo, her lack of one and how they shook it all night long for their new dance movie.

"I wanted an angry dance," actress and dancer Julianne Hough says of the fact that she did not get to perform a dance solo while shooting the remake to the 1984 classic Footloose.

Footloose

"But it wasn't in the original," she laments during an interview with SheKnows and co-star Kenny Wormald.

"Angry dance" is the behind-the-scenes term for the dance solo that Wormald does in the warehouse scene. You might remember it from the 1984 version with Kevin Bacon. He goes nuts in the rafters!

"You should put an 'angry dance' on YouTube," Wormald encourages Hough. She just laughs, but we agree that she deserves a solo, too. In the new Footloose, which comes out October 14, Hough plays wild child Ariel who falls in love with the town newcomer, Ren MacCormack, played by Wormald.

Movie review: Footloose >>

Hough is a two-time Dancing with the Stars winner and Wormald hails from MTV music video fame . Both professional dancers for most of their lives, Hough and Wormald often stayed up all night to get the film's electric dance scenes just right. "For a lot of those scenes," Wormald says, "6 a.m. would be the last shot."

But that didn't bother this dynamic duo, whose on-screen chemistry is just as electric as it is in person. So, why if both these phenomenal dancers are equally matched did only one of them have an angry dance scene...?

Julianne Hough "fought" for Footloose role

Julianne Hough's role in Footloose wasn't always a lock. Read on to find out what she went through to make her starring debut in the big remake.

Julianne Hough is garnering solid reviews for her dance moves and acting skills in the remake of Footloose, but nabbing the part of Ariel didn't come that easy -- she fought for it.

Footloose opens today , with stars Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald dancing the remake into fans' hearts. And the fact that Hough had to earn the right to cut loose as Ariel makes her success all the more sweet.

Footloose movie review>>

Julianne Hough was tapped to play Ariel by original director Kenny Ortega, but when he abandoned ship, Hough had to prove herself all over again in the eyes of new director Craig Brewer.

Julianne Hough told Collider.com, "I basically had to fight for the role for the second time. I had to prove to Craig that I was Ariel, and I did, so here we are."

The girlfriend of Ryan Seacrest, who rose to fame originally as a dance pro on Dancing with the Starsadded, "It was a long, long process."

Craig Brewer finds star in Julianne Hough>>

She went on to say of Footloose, "I was attached when it was a musical. I was excited because it was a movie, and I was attached to it. I thought, 'Oh, this will just get my foot in the door for the films I really want to do later on, down the line.' Then, people started falling out, and Kenny Ortega left, and then Paramount decided to put it on hold for a minute…."

Andie MacDowell in Footloose>>

With all the uncertainty plaguing the remake, Hough began playing the second-thoughts game.

She continued, "So I was like, 'Yeah, maybe I shouldn't do this. This is not feeling right. It's not the right script. It's not like the original. The script is kind of corny.'"

Once Craig Brewer got involved, however, things got back on track. Julian Hough gushed, "And then, Craig Brewer got attached and rewrote it, and I read the script and was blown away. I was like, 'First, it's like the original. People aren't going to get mad. Second, this will actually show a range that I can do, on the acting side. It's not really about my dancing.'"

Julianne Hough now knows it was the right film to attach herself to. "Honestly, I think this is the perfect movie that I could have done for breaking into the world. I'm not stepping out of my fans' comfort zone too much, 'cause you still see me dance, but it does give me room to actually act. It's not just a dance movie with no storyline. That was great. I'm really excited about that," she said.

Get the Frye boots from Footloose

We spent most of the time watching Footloose drooling over Julianne Hough's hot Frye boots. Feel the same as we do? Now you can rock the Footloose style every day!

Footloose Frye boots

Julianne Hough is used to wearing mile-high stilettos while performing her ballroom dance routines on shows like Dancing With the Stars. Those shoes hurt our tootsies enough while we're just standing around drinking cocktails, let alone dancing in them.

Hough agrees -- she revealed that wearing Frye boots during the filming of Footloose was her favorite part of the job.

"They were so comfortable," Hough said last week during the film's Los Angeles premiere. "Way better than ballroom shoes."

Julianne Hough rocks Frye boots

Frye on fashion

Savvy fashionistas -- both urban and country -- have sworn by Frye boots for years. They're always on-trend too -- we've worn them with everything from jeans to sweater dresses and get compliments all the time.

The best part? They last forever -- the $200-plus price tag doesn't seem so expensive when you get years of wear from a single pair. We were inspired to get another pair by the beautiful Frye boots featured in Footloose. Here are our faves:

Frye Taylor Pull on

These classic Frye boots are the ones Hough wore during her famous line dancing scenes in the film.

"I love the red [Taylor Pull On] boots more than anything. I have them now. I wore all Levi's jeans… it was awesome. I loved my wardrobe in [the movie]."

These Taylor pull ons go with pretty much everything -- and we love how the color gives a bit of kick to the traditional cowboy boot look.

Frye Taylor pull on

Available at Frye for $368.

Miranda T-strap

These Frye heels give a country feel to the traditional high-heeled look. We can imagine wearing these on a fall hayrack ride.

Deborah studded harness

Even country girls need to dress up from time to time. These Frye Deborah studded harness boots can dress up a simple outfit or even make a cute accessory to a dressier look.

Deborah studded hardness frye boots

Available for $498 at Frye.

Billy heeled short

Want to wear boots, but need the height of a heel? The Frye Billy heeled short boots are the answer -- they're rugged as traditional cowboy boots, but have a high heel to glam up your look.

Is Kenny Wormald the next Channing Tatum?

$

Kenny Wormald may be a dancer-turned-actor, but that doesn’t mean he wants to follow in fellow hoofer Channing Tatum’s footsteps. He would rather blaze his own path in the industry, one meaty role at a time.

Kenny Wormald

It has taken the better part of ten years for Kenny Wormald to get the recognition he deserves. As a principal dancer for everyone from Madonna to Mariah Carey, JoJo, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Nelly Furtado, Prince, the Pussycat Dolls and Justin Timberlake, he has seen both the highs and lows of the business. He struggled for years to make enough money to pay the rent and now, as the star of the smash hit Footloose, Wormald is enjoying every moment of his "new" celebrity.

Said Wormald to the Los Angeles Times, "I've been out here for nine years and it's been a struggle. Rent, even up until a while ago, was a struggle. I used to make like 500 bucks shooting a music video. And if I taught, I'd make $90 and hour. I make more than that now and if I need to teach, I will."

Read our exclusive interview with Wormald and co-star Julianne Hough here >>

Although both Wormald and co-star Julianne Hough went into this major project with little or no acting experience, they had a gem in acting coach Cameron Thor, who worked with the two. Thor had Wormald watch scenes from James Dean films for inspiration and surprisingly, the silent but critical interaction between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain.

But as always, there are comparisons to be made. The name Wormald hears most is Channing Tatum, who also started out as a dancer in 2006's Step Up and has since gone on to forge a lucrative movie career, appearing in films such as Public Enemies and Dear John.

Wormald can clearly see how the two could be compared, but states in response, "I'm not trying to mimic his career by any means, but I'd like to do some of the [stuff] he did. Like even that one scene in Public Enemies…yeah, I'd do that right now. I want to do, like Rounders or some Ryan Gosling-type stuff."

Friday's Fashion Fails: Julianne Hough and Zoe Saldana

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Julianne Hough and Zoe Saldana's fashions fell short in our new weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough

She must have given boyfriend Ryan Seacrest the night off from approving her wardrobe... what else could explain the dress Julianne Hough wore to the MTV Movie Awards? The Rock of Ages hottie usually rules the red carpet but we're not wild about this midriff-baring Sally LaPointe creation she chose.

Dancing with the Stars alum Julianne has an amazing body but something about this frock isn't figure flattering. The super short hemline, combined with the peplum and cutout over her abs chop up her petite frame and make her look less svelte.

Sure, anything goes at the MTV Movie Awards, but we think this lacy dress would have looked more chic with the cutout in the back instead of in the front. She's already showing a lot of leg in this look, so it's good to leave a little to the imagination.

The final verdict? It's not the worst look ever, but we know Julianne can do better! She's on the verge of becoming a huge breakout star, so we hope she's ready to step up her fashion accordingly.

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana

Let's start by saying this outfit is totally fine for many occasions -- like walking around the city or heading to lunch or drinks. But black leather shorts and stiletto heels are so not right for a polo match!

When we think polo, classy, casual-chic and preppy attire immediately come to mind. A floral sundress or a flowy maxi dress with wedges or flats, like Rachel Zoe chose, would be perfect. But instead, Zoe Saldana wore an all-black, biker babe ensemble to attend the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.

Besides the fact that it looks totally wrong for the annual event, stiletto heels make no sense for this function, where VIPs sip bubbly under a tent in a grassy field at Liberty State Park. With those massive heels, Zoe was probably leaving divots in the field like the horses do instead of stomping them down mid-match, as tradition dictates.

The final verdict? Her outfit is cute, but it's not practical or appropriate for polo. We do love her stylish shades and sleek ponytail, though.

Julianne Hough and Jessica Chastain's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough

Ryan Seacrest's sexy and talented girlfriend slipped up on the red carpet at this week's MTV Movie Awards, earning a spot right on our worst dressed list, but Julianne redeemed herself later this week at the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards in NYC.

Julianne showed up in a sexy meets classy red plunging Kaufman Franco Chinese crepe gown and we certainly noticed. The look shows off Julianne's hot dancer bod in all the right places, and the plunging neckline of the floor-grazing gown offers a sexy flash of skin without looking sleazy.

Did we mention how much we love the red-gold combo? Yep, we've always been a sucker for this color hybrid and love Julianne's shiny clutch.

The final verdict? The whole look is elegant from head to toe. Great hair and makeup, classy gown -- it all works. Well done, girl!

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain

We've admired Jessica Chastain's acting skills for quite some time, but we've also been silently stalking her style moves all along. This week, the stunning actress showed off her fashion know-how at the CFDA Fashion Awards in NYC, showing up in a gorgeous Prabal Gurung dress and Harry Winston jewelry.

Is it just us or does Jessica seem to float on clouds in this ethereal white number? We love the feminine and flowy white sleeves and skirt and are digging her choice of gold heels.

The final verdict? Jessica dressed the part well for this event. When fashion's royalty step out, you want to impress, and let's just say that we're pretty impressed by her look.

Julianne Hough and Holly Madison's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough is at the top of our best dressed list for the second week in a row! After dazzling us in red last week, Julianne is now wowing us with her black and white Valentino dress.

We're huge fans of feminine, puffy sleeves done in a chic, non-tacky way and love the elegant look this dress exudes. It has just enough sex appeal with the deep plunging neckline but has a classy length. Julianne wore the look for the London premiere of Rock of Ages and paired it with black peep toe pumps and a flirty updo.

The final verdict? We think the look is entirely appropriate for the setting! Rock of Ages is a fun movie and we love that Julianne didn't take herself too seriously and wear something too over the top.

Holly Madison

Holly Madison

Holly Madison isn't usually on our fashion radar all that often, but this week, we did a double take when we spotted her shopping in West Hollywood. The reality star looks as sunny as can be in her yellow dress and green cardigan, and we love the bold color combo -- a hot trend for summer!

Holly accessorized her look with neutral sandals, a pale pink bag and a pink and purple hat, and we're totally digging the overall effect!

The final verdict? We're not loving the hat, but overall the look meshes quite well, and for Holly, it's a hit!

Rock of Ages movie review: sex, laughs and rock 'n' roll

$
0
0
Set in 1987, this movie is a rock-and-roll fairy tale about a sweet little girl with big hair lost in a metal-band wonderland. Full of campy, over-the-top performances, Rock of Ages will have you singing in the movie theater -- I did!

ROA Tom Cruise

The film opens with Sherrie getting on a bus in the Midwest, headed for Hollywood. As she and the other passengers sing "Sister Christian," it becomes clear this movie plans to mine loads of fun from an era of MTV-created stars with ginormous hair, ripped jeans and silly choreography.

Once at the mythical Sunset Strip, Sherrie stands in front of the extinct dinosaur that was Tower Records and meets nice rocker Drew who gets her a job at hot metal club The Bourbon Room.

ROA Julianna Hough

Sinking in debts from unpaid taxes, the Bourbon Room’s owner Dennis Dupree bemoans his fate with loyal headbanger Lonny . With the help of music manager Paul Gill , they can save their club if only famed rocker Stacee Jaxx agrees to perform his farewell concert at the Bourbon.

But Dennis and Lonny have even bigger problems — the city’s mayor and his wife Patricia  plan to clean up the depraved Sunset Strip, starting with closing down the Bourbon Room.

There’s lots of silliness in Rock of Ages, like Stacee Jaxx’s leather-clad baboon and super-twisty tongue kissing, but the songs and the committed performances provide solid entertainment for the entire two hours. No small feat.

Julianne Hough transfers into the rock world beautifully. She’s no Joan Jett, but she loves rock-and-roll and manages to keep her grace and dignity despite sinking to pole-dancing status.

Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand make for strange bedfellows but this power couple steals the show. Their artful understanding of comedy makes for the most hilarious duet possibly ever put on film.

ROA Catherine Zeta-Jones

The uber-talented Catherine Zeta-Jones leads her crusading group of moms-against-satanic-rockers in a show-stopping "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" with choreography inspired by Michael Jackson’s "Beat It" music video and perhaps a little Baz Luhrmann thrown in.

Bottom line:  Rock of Ages brings the best of '80s rock to the big screen, never taking itself too seriously. You will love laughing and singing along to this fun, nostalgic musical. Enjoy!

Ryan Seacrest, CBS team up for Draw Something game show

$

Even though the popularity of the app has gone down significantly, Ryan Seacrest convinces CBS to take a chance on a Draw Something game show.

Ryan SeacrestApparently Ryan Seacrest wants to do something with the two hours he has left each day after his other numerous jobs.

The American Idol host has talked CBS into a game show based on the popular online game "Draw Something."

Actually, it wasn’t so much convincing. The Hollywood Reporter reports that CBS won the bidding war between multiple networks to be able to carry the show.

Seacrest, however, will not be hosting the show.

"Draw Something" debuted just a few months ago to massive popularity but according to the Atlantic Wire, “Since [March], the game's popularity has plummeted.”

The show will reportedly feature both celebrities and everyday people competing, as well as a way for viewers at home to compete via their iPhones.

The company Zynga purchased the app from OMGPOP for $200 million in March, but since then their stocks have gone down siginificantly, along with the popularity of the game.

Seacrest’s company, Ryan Seacrest Productions, along with Embassy Row, will be producing the show.

The ironic part about this whole thing was the app is mainly based off Win, Lose or Draw, a game that already had its own show in the 1990s.

The app’s waning popularity is not a good sign for the show, as it barely lasted six months.

But Ryan Seacrest has been known to pull things off that no one else can, so he may be the show’s only hope. He is still hosting American Idol as well as two different radio shows, On Air With Ryan Seacrest and American Top 40. He is also involved in numerous other projects, not to mention that he is still dating actress and dancer Julianne Hough.

If producers think they can make a game out of a failing app, how many other apps do you think can be turned into a game show?

Is it possible to remake Marilyn 50 years later?

$
0
0
We delighted in Michelle Williams' performance as the double-M in My Week with Marilyn. But if Hollywood remade Monroe's most popular films, who could fill her shoes? SheKnows weighs in on which three movies could use a redux and which of today's actresses could tackle the roles.

Niagra

Niagra

In one of her few dramatic roles, Marilyn Monroe flew to fame as Rose, a flirtatious temptress who broke hearts in that famous pink peep-hole dress while scheming to murder her husband. This is a fantastic noire thriller with one of the best natural backdrops ever put on film. The thundering sound of rushing water and clouds of mist are a force of nature, just like Marilyn herself. In the remake, we’d cast Scarlett Johansson for her voluptuous figure and ability to play vulnerable and volatile at the same time.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Diamonds are still a girl’s best friend -- as long as their cruelty-free and eco-friendly, of course! This benevolent burlesque show is full of singing and dancing and is more than ready for a remake. Pulling from Dancing with the Stars, we’d cast triple-threat Julianne Hough as the ditzy Lorelei and Olivia Munn to play Dorothy, originally played by the snappy Jane Russell. One important stylistic factor would be to give Julianne a true platinum dye job to really stand out.

Some Like It Hot

Some Like it Hot

What a movie! What a role! Marilyn plays Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, a banjo-playing beauty who befriends two cross-dressing fugitives, originally played by Hollywood icons Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. This farce is one of Hollywood’s funniest movies and showed Marilyn at the top of her game. A little raunchy, a lot politically incorrect, we’d cast Mila Kunis for her good looks and comedic charm. As the gender-bending guys on the run from the mob, we’d cast Daniel Radcliffe and Jonah Hill in wigs and dresses for their ability to truly have fun on screen.

What modern Hollywood actress do you think could give the iconic Marilyn Monroe a run for her money?

The style goes so well with the loose, airy fabric of this gorgeous maxi, don't you think? Now those shoes… I'm not the biggest fan of them, at least not with this dress. But hey, we're talking about hair here people! And as far as that look is concerned, this one earns an A in my book.

Who knew that former Dancing with the Stars pro Julianne Hough is a master impressionist? See her do her best Sofia Vergara voice at the 2012 Primetime Emmys red carpet.

Does Julianne Hough have a future as a Sofia Vergara impersonator? SheKnows asked the former Dancing with the Stars pro to do her best impression of the Modern Family stunner on the red carpet of the 2012 Primetime Emmys on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

The verdict? We don't think Vergara has anything to worry about, but we give Hough two thumbs up for trying!

Emmys fashion: What's with all the yellow on the red carpet? >>

Hough was at the awards to support her boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest. The American Idol host and all-around media mogul was nominated for an Emmy in the Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program category for the longtime FOX reality show. He ended up losing to DWTS host Tom Bergeron, but we're sure Seacrest went home and slept on his mountain of money for comfort.

As for Hough's take on the Emmys, the Footloose stunner said she's obsessed with one of the big winners of the night.

Who's your mummy? It's a wrap for Emmys night >>

"Homeland," she quickly replied when we asked her favorite show. "I'm obsessed. I'm addicted. I'm kind of a bad girlfriend, though: We were supposed to watch it together and I ended up watching all of them in a row."

Oopsies.

The one thing they won't do together? An interview. Hough told us that it would be more than a little weird to be interviewed by her significant other. Don't get worried, though: The pair is still in some serious lust with each other. A source told HollywoodLife.com that the pair was kissing in between his duties on the E! red carpet.

Interview: Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas Sparks is an accomplished, busy writer, but he's never lost sight of the importance of connecting with his readers in an honest way. We asked for an exclusive interview with the author and he delivered. Join us as we talk about his literary journey and the birth of his latest work-turned-movie. Be sure to also check out the exclusive poster attached below!

I have to be honest.

Before this assignment, I knew little of Nicholas Sparks.

I mean I respected him for his craft; I write a grand total of, say 1,500 words a day and this guy gets paid to write novels by the pound.

I can't say I didn't like the guy or that I intentionally avoided his work; it's just been awhile since I had a girl on my side, begging me to sit down and watch the next Sparks book-turned-movie.

So, when I got the chance to draft some questions for the big guy, I figured I'd test him. You know, see if the author of modern love had the character to back up his stories.

I wasn't on a mission to drill him. I just wanted to dig a little deeper than the traditional interview and see what how he responded.

I was pleasantly surprised, and am thankful for his time.

The characters you read about and take to heart are but a thread of the man who dreams them up.

Sparks hasn't let the fame go to his head.

He's honest, humble and sincere. And this legitimacy is a testimony to his work.

Without further ado, I'd like to share Sparks' thoughts on style, inspiration and Safe Haven .

Q&A with Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas Sparks and wife Cathy ColeSheKnows: How much of yourself, your personal experiences, your dilemmas and successes inspire the characters in your work, specifically Safe Haven? Do your characters show shades of you or are they unique creations for each project?

Sparks: The Notebook was inspired by my wife’s grandparents, who had a very special relationship for more than six decades, and so the durability of that love informed Noah and Allie’s story. My wife also inspires many of the female leads in my books — she’s an inevitable influence as I think about love and family. Others, like Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember, were also inspired by family, but Safe Haven is fictional.

‘My wife also inspires many of the female leads in my books — she’s an inevitable influence as I think about love and family.’

SheKnows: How vital is environment and sense of place — both from a cultural and natural standpoint? And, where does Safe Haven take its audience?

Sparks: Setting is a major aspect in writing all of my books, both in terms of natural and cultural environments. One of the main reasons I set my books in North Carolina is the same reason I live there myself: It feels like home. I love the community, the pace of life, the languid summers and slow-moving rivers, and the beautiful small towns of North Carolina offer a richness that helps to make the stories come alive. Safe Haven is set in Southport, North Carolina, and while fate may send Katie to Southport, it, too, begins to feel like home.

SheKnows: What themes and lessons are weaved throughout this plot, explicit, and perhaps, subconscious?

Sparks: Safe Haven is a story about second chances and the redemptive power of love. Katie has a troubled past and, after fleeing Boston and finding herself in Southport, she is offered another chance at love and life.

SheKnows: When you sit down to write today, having had your share of works-turned-films, is the process any different from the years you began writing? Has this dynamic and interaction with 'Hollywood' changed your approach to imagery or dialogue for the novel’s sake?

Sparks: At this point in my career, I'm cognizant of the fact that the novel I’m writing might be made into a movie. I’ve had eight novels adapted into films, including Safe Haven, and I find that I conceive a novel with the hope and intention that will happen. I try to formulate a story that would be interesting as both a novel and a film. Once I start writing, however, it's entirely about creating the best novel that I possibly can.

‘I read a lot — a hundred books a year, easily — and as a writer, I think every book I read leaves its mark.’

SheKnows: Which authors and real-life inspirations do you consider to have been especially crucial to developing your trademark?

Sparks: I read a lot — a hundred books a year, easily — and as a writer, I think every book I read leaves its mark. Early on, I read deliberately to see how authors crafted their characters, their stories, and their sentences. I like to think part of my trademark is the quality of the storytelling, and that skill is owed in large part to reading everyone from Stephen King and John Grisham to Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck.

SheKnows: I’ve read you’re excited to command an element of danger once again. Can you please expand on this element in the context of its film portrayal and its emphasis on the plot of Safe Haven? What relationship does danger play in a novel?

Sparks: Much of the “danger” element of Safe Haven is exploring how Katie’s past is continually dragged into the present. I don’t want to give too much away for those who aren’t already familiar with the story, but the danger element drives the story and will keep people on the edge of their seats.

Safe Haven

‘Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel have such a wonderful and singular chemistry on set and on camera.’

SheKnows: Tell us about the decision-making process for roles in the upcoming film. Are you satisfied with the actors and actresses who will bring your characters to life?

Sparks: I am not just satisfied — my expectations have been exceeded. Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel have such a wonderful and singular chemistry on set and on camera. I shouldn’t be surprised: I’ve worked with Lasse Hallström before, and I know how talented he is. But still, as an author I think I’m always curious and anxious to see whether the actors will be able to capture the nuances I’ve imagined for my characters. They have.

SheKnows: Are you happy with the film adaption of Safe Haven?

Sparks: Yes. It’s a hit. Lasse Hallström is a supremely talented director, and he’s again crafted an excellent film.

SheKnows: Some people argue that books are always better than the film adaptions. Agreed?

Sparks: This always makes me laugh. It’s a bit like comparing apples to oranges. Film adaptations can’t be better or worse, because the medium is so inherently different. A book is maybe about 350 pages, and the prose allows for readers to get a glimpse into the internal lives of the characters. A screenplay is 120 pages, and it’s all dialogue and action. The pacing of films is different, the structure is often different, and the internal lives of the characters must come across through the acting. Movies are just a different experience than reading — so it just depends on what an individual prefers.

SheKnows: Finally, what else in on the horizon in the world of Nicholas Sparks? What can fans expect in the near future?

Sparks: I am currently working on my next novel, which I’m really excited about, and which is set to be released in the fall of 2013. Warner Bros. is developing my most recent book, The Best of Me, into a film. I’m also busy with my production company, Nicholas Sparks Productions, developing several projects, though I can’t talk about them in any detail yet. It’s been really great to work across different mediums and to see how these different ways of storytelling engage each other in a dialogue.

According to Sparks, the actors "have such a wonderful and singular chemistry on set and on camera."

"I am not just satisfied — my expectations have been exceeded," he continued.

We caught up with the author to discuss the maturation of the film and the development of his style, and after seeing today's trailer we couldn't agree more.

"It’s a hit," Sparks said. "I shouldn’t be surprised: I’ve worked with Lasse Hallström before, and I know how talented he is."

For those who may not have read the book, Sparks explained, "Safe Haven is a story about second chances and the redemptive power of love. Katie has a troubled past and, after fleeing Boston and finding herself in Southport, she is offered another chance at love and life."
